I came home today to a voicemail from the Law Offices of David L. Prince, Esq., saying they were calling regarding a debt matter. They didn’t leave much detail, just said I needed to call them back urgently.
Honestly, I’m not even sure what debt this is about. I’ve had some old medical bills and credit card stuff from a few years back, but nothing recent. I’m worried this could be a zombie debt or something that’s past the statute of limitations.
I’ve been reading up on this and it seems like the first thing I should do is NOT call them back directly. Instead, I think I need to send a certified letter asking for debt validation. From what I understand, they have to prove they actually own the debt and that the amount is correct before I owe them anything.
I’m also keeping a log of their calls just in case they start getting aggressive. I know they’re not supposed to call before 8am or after 9pm, and they can’t threaten me or harass me.
If this debt turns out to be legit, I might try to settle it for less than the full amount, but I want to make sure I get everything in writing first.
Has anyone here dealt with this firm before? Are they difficult to work with? Do they usually validate debts or do they back off when you push back? I’m pretty stressed about this and any advice would be appreciated.
Also, should I just skip all this and talk to a consumer rights lawyer? I don’t want to mess this up and end up with a judgment against me.
Thanks in advance for any help.
