Pre-travel rabies vaccination provides protection but does not mean you can ignore a potential exposure.
If you are bitten, scratched or exposed to saliva from an animal that could have rabies, you should still seek medical attention as soon as possible, even if you were vaccinated before travelling.
The UKHSA advises travellers to wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and plenty of water and seek local medical attention without delay. Post-exposure treatment may still be required.
The safest approach is to combine appropriate pre-travel preparation with sensible animal-avoidance measures and knowing what to do if an exposure occurs.
