A silt fence is a temporary sediment control device used on construction sites to protect water quality in nearby streams, rivers, and lakes from sediment in stormwater runoff. This specialized barrier consists of a geotextile fabric stretched between a series of wooden or metal stakes placed along the contour of a slope. When sediment-laden water reaches the perimeter, the fabric slows the flow, causing the water to pond and allowing suspended soil particles to settle out of suspension. It does not primarily act as a filter that strains water, but rather as a structural dam that creates a temporary pool where gravity can pull the dirt down to the ground. By trapping this dislodged soil before it leaves the disturbed area, the system prevents heavy erosion and stops mud from choking out local aquatic ecosystems or clogging municipal storm drains.
