Silt fence is a temporary sediment control device used on construction sites to protect water quality in nearby streams, rivers, and lakes from sediment in stormwater runoff. It consists of a piece of synthetic filter fabric stretched between a series of wooden or metal stakes. The stakes are driven into the ground, and the fabric is trenched into the soil to prevent water from flowing underneath it. By intercepting sediment-laden sheet flow, this barrier allows water to pass through while trapping the suspended soil particles behind it.
